"As the branches are careening down," he says, his eyes following his arm arcing in front of him, "they lift upward. The leaves have a ... lifted-up quality to them." His fingers outline and accent these delicate, language-eluding forms. He's talking about the iconic Monterey cypress near Stanyan and Fell streets, where the Panhandle meets Golden Gate Park. Lit up from head to toe shortly after Thanksgiving every year, it's San Francisco's unofficial Christmas tree.

Parents should take a second look at the artfully designed bottles of colourful fruit juice that appear to be a favourite among children. They will be shocked to read the small print on the bottle labels. For these "soft drinks" contain more alcohol than does a can of beer.

Was it something I said? Did you all have photos of that beer and that dinner you had back last March some place and you are really ticked off at the photo context prohibition on your art form ? For some reason, the email has gone cold.

It's been kinda crummy out today, but it is the sort of weather that begs for a zingy beverage. Where similar products aren't well-balanced, Adina's cold Indian Chai Latte nails the ratio of milk, black tea, and sweetener (in this case, evaporated cane juice). This organic and fair-trade beverage company is a partnership between its San Francisco-based founder Magatte Wade-Marchand and Odwalla's Greg Steltenpohl.

As we head toward Thanksgiving, Y&H wants to help you eat like a pilgrim (a Native American, too, because we're all about equal opportunity eating here). In other words, we want to help you eat locally for the holiday. Almost 400 years ago, the pilgrims had no choice but to eat local .

Knowing how well ginger plays with apples, I thought I'd improvise something with a little more substance - and a some alcohol too. I though I'd try making a Hot Apple Toddy with fresh ginger root. A cousin of that perennial cold season favorite, the Hot Toddy (whiskey, tea or hot water, lemon, honey), the Hot Apple Toddy's a deliciously apple-y fall classic, a simple blend of dark spirits, hot apple cider, and spice.

Pull your tractor into the barn (or your Civic into your garage) and get ready to celebrate this year's crop. Boulevard Brewery's Harvest Dance Wheat Wine Style Ale (750 ml bottle, $10.76 with tax at Royal Liquors on 103rd and State Line) is now on shelves. The latest entry in the Smokestack Series lets you know what to expect from the moment you begin to pour, thanks to a hint of banana.

If you like to eat, chances are you like to drink (read: a lot of you are freakin' lushes), so I thought maybe it was time to introduce a happy hour column to the site. Every week, our Happy Hour Correspondent "Mamacita" posts about a different bar in Midtown that fits the Midtown Lunch mentality: unhealthy food, not lame (unless it's lame in a cool way), and most importantly… cheap. Ever get a case of the Mondays?
